Physical Therapy Student  

Expectations:

Ø  1st year students (1st Clinical): By the end of this clinical experience students should be able to demonstrate the following with the assistance of the clinical instructor:

o   Have the ability to perform a history and basic test and measures

o   Perform and document a comprehensive patient examination

o   Begin to develop their evaluation skills

o   Develop a physical therapy diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of care

o   Complete interventions included in a plan of care of a noncomplex patient

o   Be able to complete all documentation for the noncomplex patient

o   Perform an in-service/project

o   On-line CPI evaluation at midterm and final

§  Red-flag criteria: Each student will display at least near-entry-level performance in each of the following areas at all times during the clinical experience.  Below that level would be a significant concern:

o   Practices in a safe manner that minimizes risk to patient, self, and others.

o   Presents self in a professional manner

o   Demonstrates professional behavior during interactions with others

o   Adheres to ethical practice standards

o   Adheres to legal practice standards

 

Ø  2nd year students (2nd Clinical): By the end of this clinical experience students should be able to demonstrate the following with minimal assistance of the clinical instructor:

o   Perform and document a comprehensive patient examination

o   Develop a physical therapy diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of care

o   Complete interventions included in a plan of care of a noncomplex patient

o   Be able to complete all documentation for the noncomplex patient

o   Start progressing with the above mentioned objectives with more complex patients

o   Perform an in-service/project

o   On-line CPI evaluation at midterm and final

§  Red-flag criteria: Each student will display at least near-entry-level performance in each of the following areas at all times during the clinical experience.  Below that level would be a significant concern:

o   Practices in a safe manner that minimizes risk to patient, self, and others.

o   Presents self in a professional manner

o   Demonstrates professional behavior during interactions with others

o   Adheres to ethical practice standards

o   Adheres to legal practice standards

 

Ø  3rd year students (3rd and 4th Clinical): By the end of this clinical experience students will be able to demonstrate the following:

o   Perform and document a comprehensive patient examination

o   Develop a physical therapy diagnosis, prognosis, and plan of care

o   Complete all interventions for a complex patient

o   Maintain 100% of a full-time PT’s caseload in a cost effective manner

o   Perform an in-service/project

o   On-line CPI evaluation at midterm and final

§  Red-flag criteria: Each student will display no lower than advanced intermediate performance at all times during the clinical experience.  By the final, all red-flag criteria must be at entry-level performance.  Any red-flag item that is checked would be cause for significant concern and may result in a “failed” clinical experience. 

o   Safety

o   Professional behavior

o   Accountability

o   Communication

o   Clinical reasoning

 

General Information:

  • City map  
  • PT department: The PT department is on the first floor inside the wellness center
  • Parking: East employee parking lot off of main St.
  • Housing: Free housing is provided in the hospital. The room consists of a bed, cable TV, 2 chairs, an adjustable table, toilet, and a sink. The shower is across the hall and is shared with any other doctors or nurses that stay her for a few days.
  • Meals: All meals are provided for free in the cafeteria. You just need to go get a meal card at the information desk.
  • Laundry: Laundry is also free and is located on the third floor. You need to use your own laundry detergent and dryer sheets.
  • Dress code: The dress code is considered a casual professional (ex. Khaki pants and a polo or button up shirt.
  • Wellness center use: The wellness center is free for students to use. It is open 7:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. Mon thru Friday, and 8:00 a.m. noon Saturday. Other times may be possible with collaboration with CI.

Outside opportunities: 

o   Observe general surgeries

o   Follow an orthatist (orthopedic doctor)

o   Follow a Prosthetist (Prosthetics)

o   View MRI’s

o   Job site assessments

o   Do therapy at a correctional center

o   Visit long term care and Basic Care facilities (ex. Haaland Home)
