Take death and dying out of the closet.

Communicating your end-of-life wishes is important. We, as Americans are focused on spas and wellness, on natural childbirth and living well. Despite that focus, too many Americans still die alone or in pain - and, in the process, are enduring costly and ineffective treatments. We need to think through the end of life process and share our wishes either in writing or with someone.

Americans are aging.

As baby boomers reach age 65 the number of seniors in the US is expected to double over the next 30 years. We have lived well ... now let’s prepare to live well at the end of life.

Hospice care is what Americans want, allowing: Someone to be sure that their wishes are enforced Choices among the types of services that can be receive. Pain control tailored to the patient’s wishes Emotional support for the patient and their family.

Hospice care neither hastens nor prolongs death.

Hospice is team-oriented approaches to expert medical care, pain management and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient’s needs and wishes. Support is extended to the patient’s loved ones, as well.

It is through hospice that each of us has the right to die pain-free and with dignity, and that our families will receive the necessary support to allow us to do so. The focus is on caring, not curing.

Many people experience pain and other distressing symptoms as illness progresses. Hospice staff receives special training to effectively anticipate, assess, treat, and prevent all types of physical symptoms that cause discomfort and distress.

Hospice care is not limited to six-months of care for terminally ill individuals.

A terminally ill patient may receive hospice care for as long as necessary when a physician certifies that they have a life expectancy of six months or less.
